TERM
The City of Bridgeport is a Mayor-Council form of government.
The mayor-council form of government consists of an elected mayor (elected at-large), who
serves as the city’s chief administrative officer, and a council (elected at-large), which serves as
the municipality’s legislative body. The council has the authority to formulate and adopt city
policies and the mayor is responsible for carrying them out. The mayor attends and presides over
council meetings but does not vote, except in the case of a tie. The Mayor has the authority to
hire and fire employees whereas the City Council has the authority over the budget.
CITY COUNCIL
The City Council is the legislative authority of the City which is vested with all spending
directives and planning policy authority of the city. The City Council through a majority vote
ultimately controls the City’s budget, all assets, and the future development of the community.
